Jesus words to keep his commands is not about making a law to his followers. it is to show love, respect and honor to the one who first loved you. His commands are also to protect us from the wrath to come upon those who chose not to accept Him and keep his commands. Love is an action and a choice, He chose to love to death to give us life.
